Lesson about how to build a circle track racer, from a woman Posted: 08 Jun 2011 08:30 AM PDT Whoever said that women cannot do great things in the auto industry is wrong. And this is the proof: Jeri Ellsworth, an ace welder and circle track race car builder, also with a quite impressive youth. She has posted some videos on YouTube about how a street stock racer should be built. During her youth, the woman dropout college, learned by herself computer programming and by the age of 20 she already had her own racer car building business. In the video below you can see how Ellsworth meticulously and carefully builds a 1981 Chevrolet Camaro racer. This is actually a lesson for the persons who aspire to get to NASCAR. Keep in Touch with Your Volvo using a Mobile app Posted: 08 Jun 2011 06:13 AM PDT From now on, your friends aren't the only with whom you can stay in touch. Your Volvo car has recently announced to become a kind of a fellow that you can check on from time to time. How is this possible? By using Volvo's mobile application: after downloading to the smartphone, the owner of the car can start communicate with its vehicle, control some of its functions and features and even download some trip information. This is what this application does: Actually, this application is an extension of Volvo On Call which offers assistance in case of accidents and emergencies. Unfortunately, the free download will be available only for the owners of 2012 model year Volvos. What do you think about Volvo's mobile app? Post published on Rpmgo.com |
Lotus Will Build Its Own Engines Posted: 08 Jun 2011 12:00 AM PDT We have some great news if you are a fan of Lotus. Dany Bahar, the company's boss recently affirmed that they will develop their very own lineup of V6 and V8 engines, after deciding to postpone the launch of the all-new Elan model. The first prototype V8 "will fire up in July", a year after the company has started working on new engines. According to insiders, this power unit will produce approximately 550-570 hp. Lotus decided to develop its own lineup of engines after their Internet survey which was carried out after presenting the six concept cars at last year's Paris Motor Show. The 10,000 responses they got suggested that the British company should start making their own engines, instead of borrowing them from Toyota. Sexy 2012 Opel Astra GTC Goes Official Posted: 07 Jun 2011 11:30 PM PDT I loved the previous generation of the Astra GTC and the new one is even more breathtaking. General Motors decided not to wait anymore and unveiled the model, ahead of its public debut which will occur this September during the 64th edition of the International Motor Show in Frankfurt. Set to go on sale later on this year, it will wear the Opel badge in Europe, except for United Kingdom as it will be available as a Vauxhall. In addition, if we were to believe recent reports, U.S. will get a Buick Astra GTC version. Opel says that compared to the 5-door hatchback and the estate versions, the only elements that these cars share are the door handles and the roof aerial. Even the tracks and the wheelbase have been changed for the GTC version. The sporty model has been lowered by 15 mm and the wheelbase has grown in size by 10mm. In addition, both tracks are wider now, measuring 1,584 mm in the front (+40 mm more than before) and 1,588 mm in the back (+30 mm than before). Opel and Vauxhall said that the new generation of the Astra GTC is a more driver's car in comparison to its 5-door sibling. We have enough reasons to believe this statement if we take into consideration the fact that it features a High Performance Strut setup, which can be found on the OPC / VXR version of the Insigna, while the standard model, comes with a regular McPherson suspension configuration. Out in the back, the 2012 Astra GTC has the same Watt's link axle, but Opel offers the possibility to opt for a fully-adaptive FlexRide chassis control system that comes with three settings: standard, tour and sport. Upon launch, customers will be able to choose from four engines, but others will follow, including the all-mighty OPC version which will be out sometime in 2012. At the moment, we know that it will come with a 2.0-liter CDTI common-rail turbo diesel power unit that produces 165 hp and 380 Nm of torque. It benefits from a diesel particulate filter and is mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox, along with Opel's new generation of the start/stop system. Powered by this engine, the Astra GTC needs 8.9 seconds to do the 0-62 mph sprint, on its way to a top speed of 131 mph (210 km/h) while returning 48 mpg (4.9 liters / 100 km) and CO2 emissions of 129 g/km. The most potent engine will be a turbocharged gasoline 1.6-liter unit, good for 180 hp and mated to a 6-speed manual transmission, enabling the car to reach a top speed of 137 mph (220 km/h). A less powerful 1.4-liter, 4-cylinder, turbocharged engine will be available in two output configurations: 120 hp and 140 hp. In United Kingdom, prices for the 2012 Astra GTC start from 18,495 pounds for the model fitted with the 1.4-liter 120 hp engine, while the 165 PS SRi 2.0 CDTi will set you back at least 22,430 pounds. Tesla Model S Alpha Version Revealed Posted: 07 Jun 2011 11:00 PM PDT A few days ago, Tesla Motors unveiled a Model S Alpha prototype which is a near product-ready model that we will be seeing in the second half of next year. In comparison to the latest prototype we've seen, the Alpha version comes with a new front bumper and bigger front air intakes, even more beautiful than before. Deliveries of the Tesla Model S will start in mid-2012 for the North American market while Europe will have to wait a couple of months. It will be available in three main variants, differentiated by the range. The top-spec model, dubbed Model S 300M will have a base price of about $77,400 and will come with the biggest battery pack available that should last approximately 300 miles (483 km). The entry-level model, named 160M will offer a driving range of up to 160 miles (258 km) while the mid-range 230M will provide a driving range of 230 miles (307 km). The latter will be $10,000 less expensive than the 300M while the 160M will be $20,000 cheaper. Source: Tesla Motors via WCF Post published on Rpmgo.com |
Citroen Reveals DS3 Grey Matter Special Edition Posted: 07 Jun 2011 10:30 PM PDT Car manufacturers have figured out that these special editions sell like cup cakes and the latest manufacturer to roll out one is Citroen with its DS3 Grey Matter model. Featuring a matte grey exterior paintjob, this stylish model comes with chrome accents on the doors, mirrors and tailgate. It also sports a contrasting roof (in white or black) and funky color-matching 17-inch alloy rims. On the inside, nothing much has changed in comparison to the regular model except for the new Mistral leather upholstery along with the MyWay Select comfort package that comes with GPS, premium audio system and automatic climate control. Customers will be able to choose from one of the two engines available: VTi 120 and THP 150. The first one generates 118 hp (120 PS / 88 kW) and has a peak torque of 118 lb.-ft (160 Nm), while the second unit cranks out 154 hp (156 PS / 115 kW) and 177 lb.-ft (240 Nm) of torque. Prices for the Citroen DS3 Grey Matter start from 23,400 Euros and the French automaker has announced that they will build only 750 units. Source: Citroen via WCF Post published on Rpmgo.com |
It Came From Hell – Nissan Juke by Impul Posted: 07 Jun 2011 10:00 PM PDT If this isn't your first time on RPMGO, you probably know that we're not big fans of the Nissan Juke. Well, the tuning specialists over at Impul have managed to do something that I thought was virtually impossible: make the car even uglier. Well, they did it! They've installed a new grille, a front spoiler, rear diffuser, aerodynamic side skirts and that ridiculously big rear wing. The standard Juke doesn't look that bad if you look at its back but this one looks horrible. The only thing that saves this new design is that new set of 19-inch alloy wheels which looks pretty nice, too bad that the car isn't. Impul offers a remapped ECU for the models fitted with the 1.5-liter engine or the 1.6-liter unit, but they didn't reveal any performance figures. They did however say that it will "improve engine response and mileage." They also can offer a sport-tuned suspension, a stainless steel sport exhaust system as well as a high performance braking system. Source: Impul via WCF Post published on Rpmgo.com |
Porsche Cajun Will Get Powerful Diesel Engine Posted: 07 Jun 2011 09:30 PM PDT According to our esteemed colleagues from Autocar.co.uk, the Porsche Cajun (aka baby Cayenne) will get a powerful diesel engine from the Audi Q5. We are talking about a V6 3.0-liter unit that produces 309 hp (313 PS / 230 kW) and has a peak torque of 479 lb.-ft (649 Nm), outperforming the current V6 3.0-liter that generates only 247 hp (250 PS / 184 kW) and 406 lb.-ft (550 Nm) of torque. Aside from the Audi Q5 and the Porsche Cajun, this engine will also be available for the following models from Audi: A3, A4, A5, A6, A7, A8 and the Q7, according to Axel Eisner who is the company's head of engine development. Eisner denied the rumors regarding that this power unit will be the foundation for a new lineup of diesel-powered "S" variants, but did admit that Audi is developing an oil-burner 4-cylinder twin-turbocharged engine. Posted: 07 Jun 2011 09:00 PM PDT The RSC Predator GT is the updated version of the Raptor GT, a car that got some heavy criticism due to the fact that it looked a lot like the Ferrari 599XX. The company ditched that styling and opted for a new one that it too is similar with an Italian supercar, this time something coming from Lamborghini. Under the hood it will have the same engine, which is a 4-rotor Wankel unit, based on Mazda's 13B MSP, producing 1184 hp (1,200 PS / 883 kW). This very powerful engine will be mated to an 8-speed sequential gearbox. With a curb weight of only 2,425 lb (1,100 kg), the RSC Predator GT will be able to do the 0-62 mph sprint in less than three seconds. Unfortunately we don't know when the car will enter production phase. They were supposed to present a prototype in late 2010, but since that didn't happen, we probably won't be seeing a production version this year. But this project does look promising though… I'm really looking forward for a car that could take down the all-mighty Bugatti Veyron Super Sport, but I guess we'll have to wait… Source: Rotary Super Cars Germany via WCF Post published on Rpmgo.com |
