Posted: 25 May 2011 03:00 AM PDT The new generation of the Lancia Ypsilon was unveiled earlier this year at the 81st edition of the Geneva Motor Show. It will be available only as a 5-door hatchback and as you can see from these photos and video, it will have a bolder design, along with a more prominent grille, hidden rear door handles and LED taillights. As far as the cabin is concerned, customers will be able to choose from a lot of customization options. Upon launch, the car will be available in three trim levels, the most expensive one packing leather upholstery, Blue & Me-TomTom LIVE and a high quality audio system. Lancia will offer three engines for the Ypsilon: a 1.2-liter EVO plant that generates 68 hp (69 PS / 51 kW) and has a peak torque of 75 lb.-ft (102 Nm). This should be enough for a 0-60 mph sprint in 14.5 seconds, and a top speed of 101 mph (163 km/h). The car will average 4.5 liters / 100 km and CO2 emissions of 115 g/km. For those of you that want a more powerful engine, the Italian manufacturer will offer the 2-cylinder 0.9-liter TwinAir power unit that develops 84 hp (85 PS / 63 kW) and 107 lb.-ft (145 Nm) of torque. With this engine, the Ypsilon needs "only" 11.9 seconds to reach 60 mph, on its way to a top speed of 109 mph (176 km/h). Fuel consumption is rated at 4.2 liters / 100 km while CO2 emissions are 99 g/km. If you prefer diesels, the Ypsilon can be powered by a 1.3-liter MultiJet II engine that produces 90 hp (95 PS / 70 kW) and has a peak torque of 147 lb.-ft (200 Nm). The diesel-powered version will reach 60 mph in 11.4 seconds and a top speed of 114 mph (183 km/h). The benefits of this economical engine can be found in the fuel consumption figure: only 3.8 liters / 100 km. It is also quite eco-friendly, with CO2 emission of only 99 g/km. No word about the price list for the new Lancia Ypsilon, but we do know that it will hit the dealerships next month. Later on in September, Chrysler will launch its own variant for the UK market. TOPCAR Announces Porsche Panamera Stingray GTR Posted: 25 May 2011 02:00 AM PDT I never thought that one day I will be saying that I like the Porsche Panamera. Well, that they has come, thanks to the guys over at TopCar who revealed their newest styling package for what used to be a very ugly car in its standard configuration. They named it "Stingray GTR" and it looks pretty awesome if you ask me, with those muscular new bumpers, the modified doors and the widened fenders. They also fitted the car with a new bonnet, a more aggressive diffuser, a huge rear wing and extended side skirts. Leaving the looks aside, TopCar also throws in two performance packages for the Panamera. The first one raises the output of the V8 4.8-liter engine to more than 600 hp (447 kW) by installing a high-flow air filter; an intake manifold and a brand new sports exhaust system. If you want more power, they also offer the 700 hp (522 kW) package. This great styling package will set you back at least $63,500 and they'll make only 25 units so grab one while you still can. Porsche Explains Boxster E Prototypes Posted: 25 May 2011 01:00 AM PDT A couple of months ago, the German automaker Porsche revealed that they were working on three electric prototypes based on the company's Boxster model, but they only shared a photo and said that the electric motors generate 241 hp (180 kW). Fortunately, after taking the Boxster E in Berlin at the Michelin Challenge last week, they released more juicy details about these three prototypes (one of them is all-wheel drive while the other two are rear-wheel drive). The AWD model is powered by two electric motors, one installed on the front axle while the other on the rear one, generating a combined output of 241 hp (180 kW) and a peak torque of 398 lb.-ft (540 Nm) @ 12,000 rpm. As far as the RWD models are concerned, they feature only a rear axle-mounted electric motor that produces 121 hp (90 kW) and 199 lb.-ft (270 Nm) of torque, enough for a 0-60 mph sprint in 9.8 seconds and a maximum speed of 93 mph (150 km/h). All of these three green Porsche Boxster prototypes come with a 29 kWh lithium-ion battery that should be enough for a driving range of up to 107 miles. The battery has a curb weight of 752 pounds (341 kg) and the German engineers installed it where the combustion engine used to be. The entire car tips the scales at 3,527 pounds (1,600 kg). By using a regular socket, the battery can be charged in about 9 hours. The company said that although there are new electric components installed on these Boxsters, there is still enough room in the front storage compartment for a luggage, along with the regular rear luggage area of the normal Boxster. Obama’s 8-tons bullet proof limo can’t exit the parking lot Posted: 24 May 2011 07:08 AM PDT Guess that the Presidential Car isn’t so invincible after all. Barack Obama’s Cadillac limo got stuck yesterday at the US Embassy exit in Ireland because of it’s length. This eight tons bullet/missile-proof rolling tank had difficulties crossing over a kerb outside the US Embassy in Dublin. The crowd who witnessed the moment didn’t miss the chance to record the fail-worthy event. At least we know why the russians were laughing about so hard these past days. In-car Monitoring of Driver’s Health – from Ford Posted: 24 May 2011 06:41 AM PDT Driver's health seams to be an important concern for Ford. Otherwise we cannot explain their ongoing activity of developing an in-car monitoring system which to help people with chronic illnesses (such as diabetes, asthma or allergies) – unless the 78 percent of U.S. consumers who expressed their interest in mobile health solutions, from a recent survey conducted by CTIA-The Wireless Association and Harris Interactive. The system would empower people with self-help information while they drive, being the industry-first voice-controlled in-car connection. In order to succeed doing this, Ford uses Healthcare Experts Research SYNC Health, Wellness Connectivity Services and leading healthcare industry experts.
declared Paul Mascarenas, the chief technology officer and vice president at Ford Research and Innovation. Combining Bluetooth, cloud services and Ford apps with some medical devices, a series of important health-related information and alerts can be provided, such as glucose level, allergies, all those being connected to the WellDoc platform. Ford's innovating idea is to introduce this entire monitoring system in production process. In addition to all that we have already mentioned, the goal is the application to incorporate driver's heart rate and stress levels, too. Click here to view the embedded video. This could be really useful for auto makers in identifying driver's stress sources while driving and try to improve, minimize or correct those issues. What do you think about Ford's initiative?
