The scratch-proof car, a dream come true?

Scratch Proof Car

Scratches are some drivers’ worst nightmare. I don’t really care about them (unless they’re ginormous, I can live with several minor scratches on my car), but I’ve seen people going crazy once they spotted a scratch on their beautiful new car. However, thanks to the University of Southern Mississippi, Hattiesburg, we won’t have to worry in the future about our car’s paintwork. Because a team led by Dr Marek Urban came up with a ’self-healing’ coating that repairs scuffs or blemishes on paint when exposed to sunlight.

I was never great in chemistry, so here’s exactly how this stuff works: “The coating is a polyurethane – a material used in plastics, foams and films – containing chitosan, a chemical produced in the shells of crabs, lobsters and shrimps, and organic compounds called oxetanes arranged in rings. When the coating is scratched, the rings of oxetane are broken to expose chemically reactive sites. Ultraviolet light splits open the chitosan molecules exposing another set of reactive sites. The oxetane and chitosan attract each other, bond and close the scratches.” And here’s a photo that illustrates it:

Scratch Proof Car

So, apparently, after only 15 to 30 minutes (depending on the sunshine), your car’s paintwork will be exactly the same it was when you bought it. However, there’s also some bad news. The process only works once, if you get scratches in the same place you had another one that ‘healed’, it won’t work the second time. Like I said, I’m no chemistry genius, but I wonder why? I mean, like that it’s kinda useless.

BMW Z10 ED sketch released, might make it into production

Posted: 13 Mar 2009 12:42 PM PDT

BMW Z10 ED Concept

The concept you see in the sketch above is the BMW Z10 ED, a car that could make it into production in the future. The car was designed by Adrian van Hooydonk, BMW’s new head of design who says the Z10 ED is BMW’s vision of the future, a green car capable of delivering an exciting dynamic experience. According to AutoCar, the Z10 ED will be an £80,000 ($112,000) Audi R8 rival which will offer very low CO2 emissions and an engaging drive. The car will feature BMW’s Efficient Dynamics, active aerodynamics and a wholebunch of other green technologies, like the heat collector, which turns exhaust gas into electricity.

However, van Hooydonk also added that BMW hasn’t reached a final decision about this project so, due to the harsh economic climate, it is possible the Z10 ED to be launched not as a supercar, but be placed in another BMW class. We hope to get more info on this project soon so stay tuned, because rumors say that an official unveiling might be set for the end of this year (maybe the Frankfurt Show).

First official details on the Lamborghini Murcielago LP650-4 Roadster

Posted: 13 Mar 2009 12:20 PM PDT

Lamborghini Murcielago LP650-4 Roadster

The Italian car maker released the first official photos and details of the upcoming limited edition Lamborghini Murcielago LP650-4. If you’re wondering what’s with the ‘650′ in the name, it’s because the car will be powered by an upgraded version of the V12 engine (6.5 liters) which delivers 650 hp (478 kW) and 660 Nm of torque and which will only be available for this roadster version. Powered by this beast, the new Lambo convertible sprints from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.4 seconds and reaches a top speed of 330 km/h (205 mph).

Like we said, the LP650-4 Roadster will be available in a limited run of only 50 units and it will feature a Grigio Telesto exterior with grey bodywork combined with a special bright orange paint for the front spoiler and side sills. This combination is also used for the interior, where we have orange touches, asymmetric dash design with black Alcantara leather on the driver’s side and black Nero Perseus leather for the passenger’s side. And of course, the car has LP650-4 logos applied both to the exterior and the interior.

So far, there’s no official word on how much the car will cost (we have a feeling it ain’t gonna be cheap) or when exactly Lamborghini plans on releasing the Roadster, but stay tuned because we’ll let you know once we find out.

Video: MTV shows new Fast and Furious clip

Posted: 13 Mar 2009 11:05 AM PDT

With less than a month left until the new Fast and Furious 4 movie will hit cinemas (on April 3), here’s a new movie clip recently released on MTV. In case you forgot, the fourth installment of the popular Fast and Furious series will feature both Vin Diesel and Paul Walker and, considering the last movie was a mess (except for the soundtrack), we’re really anxious to see the new movie who promises some real hardcore action. So, what do you think, is it gonna be any good?

The Homer Mobile, covered in keyboard keys

Homer Mobile Mitsubishi Galant

So, what do you when you own a 1997 Mitsubishi Galant (which is definitely not the most impressive cars out there), you can’t afford a cooler car and you have a lot of spare time in your hands. While others might consider some wacky paint job, this guy decided to cover his car with keyboard keys picturing the famous Homer Simpson. To be honest, we rather admire the man’s patience than the final result, because this “artwork” is kind of a pain to look at.
