Top Gear Preparing Another Anti-EV Episode Posted: 13 May 2011 04:00 AM PDT It seems that in the upcoming season of Top Gear, one of the episodes will contain yet another anti-EV stunt, after the one with the Tesla Roadster in the 12th season. The crew of the show was spotted in Lincoln, traveling in a pair of EVs, the Nissan Leaf and the Peugeot iOn. The latter will go on sale in the United States as the 2012 Mitsubishi "i". Jeremy Clarkson and James May visited Lincoln searching for recharging stations for their EVs, which they were trying to drive across the country. As you would expect, the cars ran out of juice outside the offices of the Lincolnshire Echo newspaper. The 17th season of Top Gear will start this June. Click here to view the embedded video. Cars We Hate Part 8 – Reliant Robin Posted: 13 May 2011 03:00 AM PDT Remember the awful Reliant Robin? It was a small 3-wheeled car that was manufactured by the Reliant Motor Company in Tamworth, England. It had an official curb weight of less than 992 lb (450 kg) and it could have been driven by holders of a B1 category driving license in UK. In fact, it was registered and taxed at motorcycle rates, meaning that drivers could have saved 55 pounds each year in comparison to a normal car. That single wheel in the front was in charge of the steering, while the front-mounted engine drivers the rear axle. This awful vehicle saw the light of day in November 1973, replacing yet another 3-wheeler, the Reliant Regal. It was replaced in 1981 by the Reliant Rialto – again, with only three wheels! MEBEA made the car under license in Greece from 1974 until 1978, while Sunrise Automotive Industries Ltd. sold it as the Badal in India. As if this wasn't enough, in 1989 the company brought the Robin name back to life, launching a new model that had a fiberglass body and more power. This updated Robin was once again upgraded in 1999 when the final version (thank God) was launched, featuring new panels and front lamps borrowed from the Opel Corsa. In 2001 they stopped making it. The last 65 units manufactured in were a Special Edition, dubbed "Robin 65" and they had a walnut interior, leather trim, along with a numbered plaque. The price? An almost incredible 10,000 pounds! We'll let Top Gear tell you more about it: Click here to view the embedded video. Source: Wikipedia.org Post published on Rpmgo.com |
Delta E-4 Revealed – Green, But Ugly Posted: 13 May 2011 02:30 AM PDT Delta Motorsport is a UK automaker and its latest model is this awful-looking Delta E-4 electric coupe. This EV has been developed from ground up and promises a range of 200 miles with the battery full. Delta says that it can do the 0-60 mph in less than 5 seconds, before hitting a top speed of 150 mph. The carbon composite chassis has a curb weight of only 85 kg, which is 35% less when compared to a regular steel structure. The YASA electric motors have been developed by the Oxford University, and they produce more than 188 hp and over 443 lb.-ft. The car will participate in the RAC Future Car Challenge in November, which is an event that showcases low-energy vehicles in a 60-mile rally from Brighton to London. Posted: 13 May 2011 02:00 AM PDT I'll never understand why anyone would want to launch a tuning program for the tiny Smart ForTwo. Anyway, the aftermarket specialist over at Vilner have released one, featuring lots of visual modifications, but no power upgrades. Dubbed "Square Style", this special ForTwo was developed for a Bulgarian businessman that wants to use it for advertising purposes. As you can see, Vilner worked on the entire exterior look. It has an orange tridion safety cell and chromed plated panels. Also orange are the headlights, mirrors and the wheels. Inside, we find a two-tone upholstery in black & orange. Some of the other accents have been chromed and a new steering wheel has been installed. You can see the end result here: Click here to view the embedded video. Post published on Rpmgo.com |
2012 Mercedes A-Class Hatchback Revealed Posted: 13 May 2011 01:30 AM PDT Several weeks ago at the Shanghai Auto Show, the German automaker Mercedes unveiled its A-Class Concept, previewing the upcoming production version. Now, we have pictures with the car that we will be seeing on the streets next year and to my disappointment I have to say that it looks very boring if we put it side-by-side with the concept. These images come from the European patent office and we see the 5-door hatchback model, which should be officially launched this September at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Although it has been shaped after the concept, it looks way less dramatic, even boring some might say. Anyway, it still is far better than the current A-Class as Mercedes has decided to forget about the minivan style and adopt a more traditional hatchback look to rival with the Audi A3 and the BMW 1-Series. The concept version had an all-new turbocharged, direct-injection 4-cylinder 2.0-liter gasoline engine and we will probably see it in the production model, along with other gasoline engines and updated diesels. There is going to be a 3-door version, which will hopefully look more aggressive than this 5-door variant, along with at least another body style, probably a mini CLS model, designed for the North American market. SAAB-Hawtai Motor Group Deal Goes Down South Posted: 13 May 2011 01:00 AM PDT It was just a couple of weeks ago when SAAB's owner Spyker, affirmed that a deal with China's Hawtai MotorGroup has been made. If the deal went through, the latter would have given the necessary cash investment in exchange for a 29.9% stake in Spyker. However, the local authorities refused to allow the deal to advance. The two car manufacturers had agreed to sign a contract that would involve Hawtai Motor Group to provide SAAB with $216 million (150 million Euros) in cash. The deal went down south because Hawtai couldn't get the necessary backing of the government in China. Now, the only hope for SAAB comes from Vladimir Antonov, a Russian businessman and ex-Spyker shareholder that still wants to invest in the Swedish brand. Post published on Rpmgo.com |
Rumors – Mercedes G65 AMG Under Development Posted: 13 May 2011 12:30 AM PDT We already know that Mercedes has decided to reduce the production of its very special G-Class and some say that they will take it off the production line. Despite these rumors, our colleagues from Autoblog.nl say that a top-spec G65 AMG will be launched, powered by a massive bi-turbo V12 6.0-liter engine that produces 604 hp (612 PS / 450 kW). The current G55 AMG features a V8 5.5-liter power unit that provides 500 hp (507 PS / 373 kW) and has a peak torque of 516 lb.-ft (700 Nm). If it will be green-lighted for production, the Mercedes-Benz G65 AMG will have a base price of $312,200 (220,000 Euros) without taxes and only 200 units will be ever made. 2013 Mercedes S-Class, New Details Emerge Posted: 13 May 2011 12:00 AM PDT We have showed you plenty of spy shots with the upcoming 2013 Mercedes-Benz S-Class, but now we have more information about the car. We've learned from our colleagues at Car Magazine that MB's luxury flagship will ride on the all-new Mercedes rear-wheel drive architecture (MRA) platform that features a 4-link front suspension and air springs. This platform promises to be very versatile if we take into consideration that the German automaker plans four body styles for the S-Class: a SWB sedan, a LWB sedan, a 4-seat convertible and a coupe. Tech-wise, the new S-Class will come with the Magic Light Control system – adaptive LED headlights, an improved and updated COMAND system which will benefit from Internet connectivity and will be able to download software updates, along with the Magic Body Control which is a system that has two cameras for scanning the road for imperfections and it can configure the suspension of the car in order to provide a silky smooth ride. The 2013 Mercedes S-Class will be available with a variety of power units, like the V6 3.5-liter twin turbo that produces 301 hp (306 PS / 225 kW), a V8 4.6-liter twin-turbo that delivers 429 hp (435 PS / 320 kW), along with two engines coming from AMG, the V8 twin-turbo 5.5-liter with 518 hp (525 PS / 386 kW) and the top-spec V12 that unleashes 650 hp (659 PS / 485 kW). Aside from these gasoline engines, the new S-Class will also be available with a couple of diesels, a plug-in hybrid and maybe an all-electric version. Mercedes E63 AMG Estate Heading To The U.S. Posted: 12 May 2011 11:26 PM PDT The German automaker Mercedes-Benz has confirmed that the E63 AMG Estate high-performance wagon will be arriving in the United States this October. Under the hood it will have a V8 twin-turbo 5.5-liter engine that develops 518 hp (525 PS / 386 kW) and has a peak torque of 699 lb.-ft. No word about the performances of the U.S.-spec model, but we do know that the European one manages to do the 0-60 mph sprint in 4.4 seconds and reaches a limited top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h), averaging 23.5 mpg (10 liters / 100 km). Just like its sedan sibling, it will come with the ECO start/stop system and AMG's 7-speed MCT gearbox, along with a panorama roof. Source: Mercedes-Benz USA via WCF Post published on Rpmgo.com |
Yet Another Porsche 911 Variant Announced! Posted: 12 May 2011 10:00 AM PDT As if there weren't enough variants of the current generation Porsche 911, the Ingolstadt-based automaker has announced yet another one – the 911 Carrera 4 GTS, just a few months away from the next-gen 911. This new variant of the current 911 is in fact the all-wheel drive version of the 911 Carrera GTS, a car that we saw first last year at the Paris Motor Show. Customers will be able to choose from both coupe and cabrio variants, powered by a 6-cylinder 3.8-liter inline engine that outputs 402 hp (408 PS / 300 kW) and has a peak torque of 310 lb.-ft (420 Nm). As standard, this engine will be mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox or with the optional 7-speed double-clutch PDK transmission. 0-60 mph will be done in 4.6 seconds for the coupe model fitted with the manual, while the convertible is a little bit slower, needing 4.8 seconds. The PDK gearbox shaves off 0.2 seconds for both variants. The car features a new wide bodykit that has a wider rear track, a front apron, black spoiler lip, black side skirts, along with 19-inch RS Spyder black-painted rims with central locking. The cabin gets sports seats and a black Alcantara trim for the center console, gearshift, steering wheel rim, door handles and handbrake lever. As far as the PTM all-wheel drive system, it features torque vectoring in order to send the suitable amount of twisting power to the wheels in the front with a limited-slip differential for the car's rear axle. In Germany, the base price for the coupe version is 111,959 Euros, while the cabriolet starts from 122,071 Euros. The model is scheduled to go on sale this July.
