The Flying Spy Camera – The Spycopter

Posted: 09 May 2011 04:11 AM PDT

Aeryon Labs have thought to a new way of using helicopters' system of flying for the transportation of the new spy camera they have built. It's not actually a miniature helicopter, but a lightweight quadrocopter, and the camera is specially designed to can be attached on it.

The VideoZoom10x camera is quite good, that it's not just for nothing called a spy camera: it is able to film from 300m away and its maximum speed is of 50 kilometers per hour; it features image stabilization system for moment the Aeyron Scout is on the move, and it can be controlled from a touchscreen-based control interface; it carries an onboard computer, GPS, gyros, and other sensors for stabilization and positioning.

Actually, the usability and the importance of this camera is quite huge: The company claims that the machine has played a key role in a drug bust in Central America by providing visual surveillance of a narco-trafficker’s compound deep in the jungle.

So, "helicopters" aren't just for transportation of people or goods, now it's for cameras too. And I think it can also be fun to have one at home, just in case you want to spy your next door neighbour over the high green fence that separates your backyards, or your wife while she takes out the garbage. It could be delightful!

Have you ever seen a car blender?

If not, this is you chance. This should be, every now an then, douchebag parkers’ punishment for messing with our nerves. Although it’s directed and I really don’t feel sorry for the Beetle, it’s a cruel way to end a car’s life.

What say you?

Alfa Romeo SUV, Coming Next Year

Posted: 09 May 2011 02:00 AM PDT

Alfa Romeo SUV (sketch)

I wonder why they had to wait that long, but next year it will finally be launched, Alfa's very first SUV. Codenamed "C-SUV", it will rival with top dogs in the SUV segment, like the Audi Q3 and the BMW X3. It will be the company's first new model since the Giulietta, which was launched last year.

Now, Alfa Romeo only sells four models in Europe: the funky Mito, Giulietta, along with the sedan and estate versions of the ageing 159. The latter will be replaced in the first quarter of 2013 by the new Giulia range, along with an all-new 5-door Mito in 2014. In addition, Alfa will also roll out its flagship model, the 4C sports car. In 2015, the facelift of the Giulietta will be launched, before a Grand Cherokee-based SUV will go into production.

Getting back to the SUV, it will most likely go into production in late 2012 at Fiat's Mirafiori plant in Turin, Italy, alongside with its sister car, a new Jeep which will replace the Patriot and Compass models.

280,000 units will be made at the factory and approximately 100,000 of them will be Alfas, which will be sold equally in Europe and the United States.

The sketch (courtesy of Autocar.co.uk) you see here shows us that the Alfa SUV will most likely borrow some design cues from the Mito and the Giulietta, especially in front, with that exaggerated grille, which we will probably see on the Giulia and the 4C.

Alfa's first SUV will be underpinned by Fiat's Compact Plus Global Modular Architecture, which in fact is an extended version of the platform used for the Giulietta that supports 4WD. 90% of this platform will consist of high-strength steels, along with front & rear lightweight crash structures. The suspension configuration consists of a MacPherson strut (front) and a multi-link rear, benefiting from aluminum which reduces weight. As far as the off-road abilities are concerned, it will be more like a Nissan Qashqai, rather than a true off-roader, like the Land Rover Freelander.

Alfa Romeo will offer its first SUV with both FWD and AWD versions. Similar to the Giulia, the power units which will be available for the SUV are expected to benefit from the Multiair 2 technology, courtesy of Fiat, which offers better fuel economy and reduced CO2 emissions. Regarding diesels, the engines will get Fiat's Multijet 2 technology, which will work with the Multiair in induction and combustion, reducing NOx pollution.

The smallest engine will most likely be a 1750 TC GDI gasoline plant that will produce about 200 hp, along with a 2.0-liter JTDm diesel that delivers 140 hp. The top-spec engine might be an all-new 3.3-liter that cranks out 273 hp, which is in fact a new Chrysler Pentastar V6 engine.

Stay tuned for more information about Alfa's upcoming SUV.

General Motors Recalls 2011MY U.S.-spec Cruze Models

Posted: 09 May 2011 12:04 AM PDT

2011 Chevrolet Cruze

A few weeks ago General Motors issued a recall concerning certain 2011MY Chevrolet Cruze units due to potential problems with the steering wheel that might come loose from the steering column. This recall affects 2,100 units.

Now, GM has announced yet another recall, involving 154,112 units of its 2011MY Cruze, the ones built in North America starting with last summer. The reason behind this decision is also related to a steering issue, and General Motors said that they want to check the car's steering shaft to see if it was properly installed. GM did not say whether these two recalls are related in any way, but they've did stated that in this latest action they want to check another potential problem that might concern about 120,000 units fitted with an automatic gearbox.

The good news is that no accidents have been reported due to these issues.

Vettel Wins Turkey GP

The defending world champion S. Vettel managed to consolidate his lead in this year's title race, managing a near-flawless drive to triumph yesterday during the Turkey GP. He started the race from pole position and he only lost it during the pit stops, claiming his third win this season, out for four races.
