U.S.-spec Mitsubishi i EV Will Cost At Least $20,490 Posted: 23 Apr 2011 05:00 AM PDT Pretty soon U.S. citizens will have a cheaper alternative to the Nissan Leaf in the form of the Mitsubishi i EV. This week during the New York Auto Show, the Japanese automaker said that the car will hit the dealerships in November this year, at a base price of $20,490 for the entry-level ES model and $22,490 for the better-equipped ES version. These prices include the government subsidies ($7,500). This means that the Mitsubishi i EV is going to be the cheapest 100% mass-production electric vehicle in North America, almost $5,000 more affordable than the Nissan Leaf, but keep in mind that the latter is a compact model, while the i EV belongs to the sub-compact segment. The car is powered by the company's MiEV technology and its rear wheels are driven by a 66 hp synchronous electric motor, along with a 330V lithium-ion battery that is capable of storing up to 16 kWh. It also sports a single fixed reduction gear transmission and the electric motor offers a peak torque of 145 lb.-ft, good enough for a top speed of 80 mph (129 km/h). With the batteries full, the car can be driven for up to 85 miles (137 km) and to fill up these batteries you'll have to wait 6 hours when using a 240V/15A Level 2 home EVSE Eaton charging station and 22 and a half hours from your conventional household outlet. The good news is that you can fill up the batteries to 80% of their level in just 30 minutes at a public quick-charging station, if there is one where you live. The battery pack has an 8-year / 100,000 miles warranty. The base model comes as standard with power windows and mirrors, AC, a 4-speaker 100-watt audio system, along with the MiEV remote system that allows the battery pack to be charged via timer and also you will be able to pre-activate the heater or the AC. Kicherer SLS 63 Supersport Revealed Posted: 23 Apr 2011 04:00 AM PDT Lately we've been talking about the Shanghai and the New York Auto Show, and we forgot to mention the latest tuning programs revealed by aftermarket specialists. Probably one of the most interesting one is this Kicherer SLS 63 Supersport, based on a Mercedes SLS AMG. Coming in a matte black foliation finish, this "angry and aggressive" car as Kicherer said, sports a shark-mouth hand-made grill, a carbon front spoiler lip and carbon fin set. The standard engine in the SLS AMG produces 563 hp (571 PS / 420 kW) and 479 lb.-ft (650 Nm), while this tuned model cranks out 621 hp (630 PS / 463 kW) and 516 lb.-ft (700 Nm), enough for a 0-60 mph sprint in 3.5 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 199 mph (320 km/h). The engineers at Kicherer also added a height-adjustable suspension kit that has a useful lift-up function that can lower the SLS by 30 mm. The car sits on hand-made 3-piece RS-1 wheels, measuring 10J x 20-inches in the front and 11.5J x 21-inches out in the back. The cabin has been fitted with a full carbon fiber trim. Kia Rio Sedan Revealed In Shanghai Posted: 23 Apr 2011 03:09 AM PDT Based on the hatchback version launched last month at the Geneva Motor Show, the Korean automaker Kia has revealed the sedan model, which keeps the same front end with those big almond-shaped headlights, and adds a new window line plus a different look in the back. The cabin is virtually identical to the one we saw in Geneva, which means that it still is a little bit boring in comparison to the exterior look which is quite attractive and stylish. In comparison to the previous generation Rio Sedan, the new one is longer, wider and lower, measuring 171.9 inches long, 67.7 inches wide and 57.3 inches high. The automaker said that thanks to the fact that they have used high-tensile-strength steel (63%), the new model offers an increased torsional stiffness for better handling capabilities, a higher ride quality and refinement, along with better results in crash tests and reduced weight. For the North American market, the 2012 Kia Rio Sedan comes with a 4-cylinder 1.6-liter GDI engine that produces 135 hp and can be mated to either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic gearbox. The new model is expected to do 30 mpg in the city and 40 mpg on the highway and will be available with the company's start/stop ISG technology. Source: Kia via Carscoop Post published on Rpmgo.com |
Aznom’s Fiat 500 Revealed At Top Marques Monaco Posted: 22 Apr 2011 01:00 PM PDT The Italian tuners over at Aznom have revealed their mid-engined Fiat 500 at the Top Marques Monaco this week. Dubbed "Motore Centrale", the car is based on the Abarth version, featuring a mid-mounted power unit that cranks out 227 hp (230 PS / 169 kW) and 243 lb.-ft (330 Nm) of torque. They've also put the car on a diet as it now weights 2314 lbs (1050 kg), which is enough for a 0-60 mph sprint in 4.7 seconds and a top speed of 149 mph (240 km/h). The car's 1.4-liter engine has been fitted with a Garret turbo, new injectors and a 200-cel catalyst. In addition, the car features a Bilstein suspension kit for improved handling. Aznom is also working on a track version of this model, called "R280 Pista". They said that the power unit will develop 276 hp (280 PS / 206 kW) and the entire car will weigh only 2094 lbs (950 kg). The 0-60 mph sprint should be done in a mere 3.9 seconds, on its way to a top speed of 162 mph (260 km/h). Click here to view the embedded video. Source: Aznom via WCF Post published on Rpmgo.com |
Maserati GranTurismo MC, Heading To The U.S. Posted: 22 Apr 2011 12:00 PM PDT The U.S.-spec version of Maserati's gorgeous GranTurismo MC Stradale model has been announced by the Italian manufacturer. Wearing the "GranTurismo MC" designation, probably the most important change over the European version is the addition of two full-sized rear seats, along with a fully automatic gearbox. The car is powered by the same engine as the Stradale, which is a V8 4.7-liter that produces 444 hp (450 PS / 330 kW) and a peak torque of 376 lb.-ft (510 Nm). However, the car's performances are not the same due to the added weight. In other words, the North American version has a sprint time to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds, which is 0.3 seconds slower than its European sibling. Top speed is also down, from 300 km/h to 298 km/h. New York Auto Show – 2012 Mazda3 Posted: 22 Apr 2011 10:11 AM PDT The Mazda3 got its official debut yesterday during the New York Auto Show, featuring a couple of mild exterior and interior updates, along with the company's SKYACTIV fuel-saving and performance-oriented technologies, a first for the North American market. Under that bonnet is a 4-cylinder 2.0-liter SKYACTIV gasoline power unit that can be mated to either an all-new 6-speed automatic gearbox or a 6-speed manual transmission, both of them belonging to the SKYACTIV series. This new engine is about 4.4 pounds lighter than the current MZR 2.0-liter unit (which is still going to be available), and it benefits from multi-hole injectors in order to enhance fuel spray characteristics, achieving a high compression ratio of 12.0:1. The engine produces 155 hp @ 6,000 rpm and 148 lb.-ft of torque @ 4,100 rpm, in comparison to the MZR engine that cranks out 148 hp and 135 lb.-ft. Matted to the aforementioned 6-speed SKYACTIV manual transmission, the 2012 Mazda3 does 27 mpg in the city and 39 mpg on the highway. Fitted in the hatchback model, the car can do 27 mpg city / 38 mpg highwaywith the manual transmission and 28 mpg city / 38 mpg highway with the automatic. Other goodies that these SKYACTIVE models have been fitted are the bigger underbody covers, along with an increased rigidity of the front tire deflectors. In addition, the cars equipped with this new engine also benefit from some exclusive features, like the brand new engine cover that sports a deep blue metallic paint finish, new headlamps that have a transparent blue ring around the center lens, along with the appropriate SKYACTIVE badges.
