Mercedes Recalls 136,000+ M-Class Units Posted: 06 Apr 2011 04:30 AM PDT Mercedes will recall 136,751 units of its M-Class models delivered in the United States because of a defect associated with the car's cruise control system. This recall involves the 2000-2004MY and it will commence in September this year. To be more exact, when the driver pumps the brakes instead of applying a consistent pedal force, the necessary level of force for disengaging the cruise control might be unusually high. The NHTSA stated that this problem with the difficulty of canceling the cruise control might lead to accidents. Mercedes added that the drivers should be able to deactivate the system by using the cruise control stalk that is on the steering wheel. Opel Astra 2.0 CDTI Gets EcoFLEX Package Posted: 06 Apr 2011 04:00 AM PDT The European-spec Opel Astra just got a new more economical model, the 2.0 CDTI (160 hp) that can be fitted with the ecoFLEX package. Already available on the smaller 1.3 CDTI, this package comes with the start/stop system and is offered as an optional feature for the 2.0 diesel hatchback and the Sports Tourer model. Aside from the aforementioned start/stop system, the EcoFLEX package also features the CleanTech Combustion Technology that promises to deliver a clean combustion, while at the same time reducing the noise coming from the engine by adjusting the fuel injection to the combustion process in real time. Just like the smaller 1.3-liter engine, the 2.0-liter CDTI has an active aero shutter that has been incorporated in the car's front grille. In addition, this model comes with more refined underbody aerodynamics. The German automaker also revealed the fact that from now on, all the Astra models that come with a manual gearbox will be equipped with a shift indicator that will show the driver when it is the perfect time to change gears for improving fuel economy. This additional option for the Astra 2.0 CDTI costs $425 in Germany. Opel said that by spring next year they want to offer 34 car/engine combustions with this EcoFLEX package, including all of the Astra models (gasoline + diesel) fitted with a manual gearbox. Prime Minister Putin Takes Russia’s First Hybrid Car For A Spin Posted: 06 Apr 2011 02:30 AM PDT You probably know that Russia's Prime Minister Vladimir Putin is a huge car fan and he even drove a Renault F1 car, plus the locally-made Chrysler Sebring. A few days ago he took Russia's first hybrid car for a spin, the Yo-Mobile (pretty stupid name). This car has been built by Yo-Auto, which is a joint-venture between truck manufacturer Yarovit Motors and Onexim Group, a company owned by Mikhail Prokhorov, a Russian billionaire that also owns the New Jersey Nets. This vehicle has a rather strange hybrid setup as it features a rotary vane engine that works on gasoline and natural gas, and is mated to a pair of electric motors. You would expect that the a hybrid car would have batteries, well, this one doesn't, as it uses a super-capacitor, which is an energy-storing device that can store the energy produced by the power unit and send it to the electric motors. The most important advantage of the capacitor is that you won't have to charge the car from a power network. The Yo-Mobile can do almost 60 mpg (3.5 liters / 100 km) and has a combined driving range of 683.5 miles (1,100 km). It can do the 0-62 mph sprint in 7-8 seconds, before hitting a top speed of 80.8 mph (130 km/h). Click here to view the embedded video. The car is going to be built starting with the second half of 2012 and will be available in three body styles: a hatchback, a cross-coupe and a van. The cheapest one is going to cost $12,000, while the most expensive will set you back $15,000. The latter will come with a four-wheel drive system, climate control, cruise control and satellite navigation system. Source: Carscoop Post published on Rpmgo.com |
