Chrysler’s sale to Fiat temporarily blocked by U.S. Supreme Court Posted: 09 Jun 2009 11:33 AM PDT According to Reuters, the sale of Chrysler to Fiat was put on hold yesterday afternoon, after U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg temporarily blocked the transaction. The order doesn’t state why or for how long the delay was sentenced, but it looks like the reason behind this is to allow more time to the court to analyze a request by three Indiana pension funds and others for a stay of the deal. Apparently, the pension funds had asked the Supreme Court over the weekend to sto the sale to they could challenge the deal in an appeal to the nation’s highest court. This complicates things for Chrysler, because both the bankrupt carmaker and the Obama administration said that a long delay could cancel the deal and force Chrysler’s liquidation, especially with Fiat being able to walk away from the dea if it doesn’t close by June 15. Also, this decision could set a precedent for General Motors, which is using the same strategy and whose creditors could use the same type of opposition which will eventually lead to a failure in GM’s restructuring. That’s about all we have for now, but we’ll let you know once more details show up. Mercedes CL AMG goes topless with NCE’s help Posted: 09 Jun 2009 11:32 AM PDT NCE (Newport Convertible Engineering) is a small company based in Placentia in northern Orange County, California which has been turning all sorts of cars into convertibles, giving wealthy customers choices that sometime manufacturers don’t. For example, they’ve worked their magic on cars like the new Dodge Challenger, the Cadillac CTS, the Toyota FJ Cruiser or the Prius and now they’ve completed this, a convertible Mercedes Benz CL AMG (we don’t know if it’s the CL63 or the CL65, but we don’t really care). We have no idea how much this costs, but one thing’s for sure…it ain’t cheap. So, what do you think about the car? I absolutely love it and I’m convinced that if Mercedes would ever consider taking something like this into production, it would definitely be a major threat to the Bentley Continental GT. Edward Whitacre to become Chairman of New GM Posted: 09 Jun 2009 10:25 AM PDT Earlier today, in a press release, GM’s interim Chairman Kent Kresa announced that when the New GM will be launched, later this summer, its chairman will be Edward Whitacre, Jr. Kresa will continue to serve as interim chairman until the launch. Whitacre and Kresa, along with current board members Philip A. Laskawy, Kathryn V. Marinello, Erroll B. Davis, Jr., E. Neville Isdell and President and Chief Executive Officer Frederick A. Henderson, will serve as the nucleus of the New GM board, while six other members of the current board will most likely retire no later than the approval of the sale of GM assets to the new entity. A selection process is currently underway for four more directors to serve on the board of the New GM. In addition, the Canadian government and the new UAW Voluntary Employee Benefit Association (VEBA) will each nominate one director, bringing the total number of New GM directors to 13. Whitacre, 67, graduated from Texas Tech University in 1964 with a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering and was chairman and CEO of AT&T Inc. and its predecessor companies from 1990 to 2007. Also, he serves on the boards of ExxonMobil Corporation and the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation. “The appointment of Ed Whitacre as chairman represents a very auspicious beginning for the New GM,” said Kresa. “We look forward to working with him to complete the reinvention of GM and maximize the enormous potential of this new enterprise.” “I am honored to be able to serve GM at this critical juncture and take part in its reinvention,” said Whitacre. $2,300 Tata Nano headed for the United States in 2 years Posted: 09 Jun 2009 10:12 AM PDT Ratan Tata, Tata Motor’s boss, has very ambitious plans for the Nano, the $2,000 car which was officially introduced this March, but created a lot of buzz ever since the first details about the project were announced. According to Mr. Tata, we might see the Nano in the United States within two years, priced at $2,300. “It will need to meet all emission and crash standards and so we hope in the next two years we will be offering such a vehicle in the U.S,” Ratan Tata told a panel at the Cornell Global Forum on Sustainable Global Enterprise late Wednesday. There’s also an European version of the Nano, which is scheduled to debut on the ‘old continent’ in 2011. So, will the $2,300 price tag and the 65 mpg fuel consumption be enough to bring the Tata Nano success in more developed markets than India, for example? It’s hard to say now, not to mention in two years, because a lot can happen until then. And even though I’m a fan of the Indian project, I’m a little skeptical about it making it on markets like the United States or Europe, but who knows we’ll just have to wait and see. Motor racing enthusiasts will be able to see Lewis Hamilton driving Ayrton Senna’s 1988 McLaren-Honda Mp4/4 turbo in what will also be a special moment for the British F1 driver, who’s been a big fan of the legendary Senna.
