Lexus IS 250C to go on sale this summer Posted: 19 Mar 2009 08:02 PM PDT Last year, at the Paris Motor Show, the Lexus IS 250C made its world debut, announcing hard times ahead for rivals like the BMW 3 Series Convertible or the Mercedes Benz CLK. And last week, Toyota announced that the car will hit showrooms this summer, in July, with a strating price set at around £30,000 (around $43,500). While the car is based on sedan version, it received a major redesign and except for the bonnet, headlamps, door handles and mirros, everything is new, in order to make room for the folding metal roof, which opens and closes in 20 seconds (the best time in its class). The car’s nose is 15 mm longer than the sedan’s, the doors are 30 cm longer to allow easier access to the back seats (the front seats also have a ‘one-touch walk-in button’ which folds the front seats and slides them forward). Under the hood, there will be the same 204 hp 2.5 liter V6 mated to a six speed automatic transmission which will allow the car to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in nine seconds and to go up to a top speed of 130 mph (210 km/h). Video: Deadly crash between a Chrysler Crossfire and a truck Posted: 19 Mar 2009 07:45 PM PDT We don’t have any certain details about this crash, because the news report’s in Russian, but from the images caught by a security cam in Russia a Chrysler Crossfire was going pretty fast, ran the red light and crashed into a truck. Like we said, we have no idea what that police officer is saying but reading through the comments from Carscoop it seems that the two dead people we see in the news report are the Crossfire’s driver and passenger, while the truck driver was thrown through the window and survived the violent accident. We’re warning you, the video ain’t pretty and it could definitely serve as an example of what wreckless driving can do. You can see the news report with images from after the crash, after the jump. Toyota Land Cruiser V8 tuning package by Wald International Posted: 19 Mar 2009 07:24 PM PDT Rappers all around the world rejoice! We usually like the tuning programs from Japanese tuner Wald International but auch, this one makes our eyes hurt. The Toyota Land Cruiser V8 is one big beast, we know that because we had the chance to test drive it last year, and giving at a sporty and aggressive is just…wrong! The Black Bison package features new, huge front bumper, side skirts, rear apron with integrated diffuser, roof wing and new alloy wheels. Unless you’ve got an exaggerated ego and really like to get noticed, we don’t see any reason why anyone would buy this package. Racing fanatic’s hearse complete lap of honour before funeral Posted: 19 Mar 2009 06:10 PM PDT Racing fanatic Michael Owen (no, not the soccer player) has been a regular spectator at Brands Hatch race track for almost 50 years and he even decided to move home in 1986 to be closer to the circuit and qualify for a free ticket offered to home owners living close to the track. However, the 60 year old lost his battle with kidney cancer and had one final wish, for his hearse to complete a lap of honour before the funeral. Foskers, a Ferrari dealership at Brands Hatch, donated a red Ferrari 360 Spider to the line-up as a gesture to Mr Owen, who was a big Ferrari fan. And that’s not all, because his family is planning on scattering his ashes in Church Wood, next to the circuit, so Michael can still be close to what he really loved when he was alive. His daughter, Sharna Peyto, said: "He was a massive motoring fan and he's always been mad on Brands Hatch. When he was 12 he used to listen to tapes of engine noises. He just loved the smell and the thrill of it." First, this might look a little too much for anyone else, but I have to say I kinda admire what the family did for him, because, after all, that’s what the man’s biggest passion was. Rest in peace! 2020 Hyundai City Car Concept created by Nicolas Stone Posted: 19 Mar 2009 05:16 PM PDT Nicolas Stone, a young CCS (College for Creative Studies) graduate decided to show his vision of how eco-friendly cars will look in 2020 and created the Hyundai City Car Concept for his thesis (the project was sponsored by the Korean carmaker). Here’s how Nicolas describes his project:
I remember when I studied photosynthesis in the 5th grade (I think) and I’m sure that if I would’ve said that this process will sometime be used to power cars, my teacher would’ve flunked me. I don’t know how advanced these technologies are, but just the thought that one day these vehicles will be sold in showrooms, is amazing. As for the design, great job, Nicolas! Lewis Hamilton wax figure on display at Madame Tussauds London Posted: 19 Mar 2009 12:40 PM PDT Yesterday, Lewis Hamilton, the youngest ever Formula 1 World Champion, joined a very select group of only a few Formula 1 drivers (Ayrton Senna, Nigel Mansell and Michael Schumacher) to have a wax figure at the famous Madame Tussauds museum in London. According to the museum press release, 300 measurements and reference shots were made and it took them 6 months and £150,000 (around $220,000) to complete the figure, which also features an exact replica of his Vodafone McLaren Mercedes race suit and replica Lewis Hamilton race helmet. Toyota considers bringing back the MR2 to rival Honda’s upcoming CR-Z Posted: 19 Mar 2009 12:22 PM PDT Introduced in 1984, the Toyota MR2 has been a real success for the Japanese carmaker and many car enthusiasts loved the small sports car. However, Toyota decided to cut down its selection of sports cars and replace them with less aggressive “sports packages”, which meant the MR2 production ended in 2007. But now there’s some great news coming from AutoExpress who have spoken with Toyota’s executive VP, Masatami Takimoto at the Geneva Motor Show and found out that the company is currently working on a small hybrid sports car, which will wear the MR2 name tag and which will rival the upcoming Honda CR-Z: “We are aware of the fondness with which the MR2 is held in the UK and Europe, and are developing a small hybrid sports car. We have set a tough price point (expected to be around £20,000), as it will be easier to sell if it is affordable. It has to be fun to drive, too, which means the hybrid set-up must be different to the Prius's, with greater responsiveness.” AutoExpress also mentions that the new MR2 will have a compact coupe shape and, if developed properly, could sprint from 0 to 60 mph in around seven seconds and could return 60 mpg and less than 100 g/km CO2 emissions. Toyota didn’t say anything about when can we expect to see at least a concept of this car, but we don’t think this car is a priority, the company focusing now on family hybrids, a lot of launches being scheduled for the next 12 months. The recession hits again: 2010 British Motor Show cancelled Posted: 19 Mar 2009 10:45 AM PDT According to a notice published on the event’s website, the the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) and the UK car companies decided to cancel the 2010 British International Motor Show. The decision is best explained by SMMT’s chief executive, Paul Everitt: “The global credit crunch has placed the automotive sector under unique pressure and has created a level of uncertainty that deters manufacturers from committing to large-scale, international events.” And here’s the official announcement from the show’s website:
Maybe not one of the biggest motor shows around, but the London event was quite important, especially for the local industry and, like it happends every time we hear a show is cancelled, we’re really sorry it got to this point and we’re waiting for the show to open again as soon as possible. Nissan GT-R crash caught on tape Posted: 19 Mar 2009 10:06 AM PDT In the past we’ve seen several Nissan GT-R crashes (in Hong Kong, Malaysia, Isle of Man, United States and again US), but here’s the first one that was caught on video. You can’t actually see much becase it’s pretty dark, but from what we found out the guy with the GT-R was racing a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX (that’s the car with the camera) on a mountain road, at night, when he lost the control of the car over a curve and smashed it. So, beside the damaged car, he also got a bruised ego to go with it, for getting his ass kicked by an older and less powerful car.
